There are 4 main mitzvos (commandments) to be performed on Purim: The reading of the Megilas Esther, in which the Purim story is told; the giving of gifts to the poor; exchanges of food and drink between friends; and the festive meal. The Megilah is read once at night and once in the morning from a small scroll written in accordance with Jewish law by a qualified sofer (scribe). Unlike all the other books of the Torah, the Megilah does not contain the name of G-d. As in the story of Purim itself, and in the story of our own lives, G-d is ever present but hidden. |
