Parsha Bereishis Bereishis/Genesis Ch.1-6/8

The Danger of Invention
by Rabbi Yechezkel Fox

And Zillah, too - she bore Tubal-Cain, sharpener of copper and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah. Ch.4/22.

Rashi comments on the name Tubal-Cain as follows: The name means he seasons the craft of Cain. The word Tubal is linguistically related to "seasonings." He seasoned and improved the craft of Cain by making weapons for murderers.

Here we have a wonderful example of how the Sages bring alive a profound level of understanding that lies hidden in each verse in the Torah. In this verse we learn a new way of looking at the history of inventions and science. Yes, Tubal-Cain invented many new and helpful tools with his ability to sharpen copper and iron; but he also opened the door to the world of weapons. On the one hand, the world was an easier place to live, insofar as working the land and hunting animals. However, it became a more dangerous world to live in, now that murderers would have access to swords and metal arrow heads. That is how things were right at the beginning of history, and that is how it is today. Nothing has changed; the wicked will always use inventions for their benefit.

As Jews, we have to focus on our inner life. On achieving higher levels of fear and love of G-d, and overcoming our baser desires in order to be free to serve G-d in the best possible way. Inventions used by righteous people can minimize their involve-ment with the physical world so they can focus more on spirituality. However, we should be aware that every new advance in technology will definitely bring more dangers along with it.
